If you follow me on Pinterest, you’ll know that I pin character and town inspirations as I’m plotting my books. The Veteran’s Vow was no different. When I was inventing the town, I knew it needed to be easily accessible to airports since Ellery has veterans arrive at her facilities for service dog training. I decided to combine elements from the towns of Monument and Palmer Lake, which are located just north of Colorado Springs and can be easily accessed by the I25 corridor and both Denver and Colorado Springs airports.

As I began writing, I pulled in pieces of Palmer Lake. The characters spend time on an overlook, and the lake is included throughout the book.

Once I had the setting figured out, it was time to look for character inspirations. I often have an idea of what I’d like a character to look like before I go searching for photos, which can make finding the right fit hard! But eventually I settled on Caua Reymond & Lily Collins for Behr & Ellery.
Then I went on to supporting characters. Behr’s Dad…
Behr’s Mom…
Behr’s sister Alessandra who plays a major role in the book.
Margo, who kind of steals the show in my opinion.

And of course we can’t forget Fletcher!
You can check out Brynn on The Veteran’s Vow storyboard.
So there you go – a quick trip through the inspirations behind the town and characters in Mt. Vista. If you picked up a copy of The Veteran’s Vow, thank you so much and I hope you’re enjoying it!

After a traumatic brain injury, military vet Behr Delgado refuses the one thing that could help him—a service dog. But Ellery Watson is sure the perfect pup will change Behr’s life and offers to work with him one-on-one. As Behr sets about overcoming his fears, Ellery’s surprised to find herself opening up about her troubled nephew. Will family obligations force them to deny what’s in their hearts?
